I’m Gilbert.

I’m an artist and I also write! My Ao3 and my main blog are both celstese and can be both found on my linktree. This is my current main art tag. I put up my art portfolio on canva. As of 2024 ive decided to start scanning old art of my dads that I have and putting them on a new side blog.

This would have had me crucified on tumblr 10 years ago but maybe we are ready for this conversation now:

If you are a socially anxious person, you have to socialize. Your panic/anxiety attacks will only get worse and trigger more frequently if you constantly avoid contact with The Public. Not saying that you need to be a social butterfly- but there is a genuine problem with not being able to order your own meal at a restaurant. And it cannot be solved by always having someone else do it for you.

This is a PSA to about 3/4s of the Portland Youth populace

everyone who reblogs this and is like “I ordered my own tea this week” or “I only barfed once when I had to give a presentation’- you are doing amazing sweetie. Have patience with yourself, you are relearning a skill so difficult that people get 4 year degrees to do it professionally.

There’s this whole story unfolding on TikTok right now about this account that got popular — a woman in the US who calls up churches & pretends to have a starving newborn that hasn’t eaten since last evening & asks them if they could help her out with a can of formula. Unsurprisingly, none of the ridiculous megachurches actually ever say yes, and the churches & other religious institutions that did say yes are getting lots of support from people.

But I just saw a video of a TT user explaining that they decided to do their own little social experiment — by walking up to drug dealers on the street, telling them there’s a young woman with a baby who needs help with formula, and literally all of them immediately reached into their pockets. In this story, the OP did have a real neighbor with a baby who ended up getting some much needed baby supplies. Thanks to the charity of local drug dealers.

A lot of Americans are learning that their rich white Christian churches are less willing to help their communities than black churches, mosques, buddhist temples, the satanic temple & apparently also crack dealers.

This got talked about on r/Judaism a lot too. I noticed a lot of people have generically criticized any institution where someone might be sent to another resource as “pawning it off”, but also an overwhelming number of folks in Jewish communities know our synagogues may not have formula on hand, but also, we literally do have dedicated organizations for the purpose of helping families. A synagogue may redirect someone to the existing Jewish organization set up to help families — Jewish Family Services.

If you really do need this kind of help, try looking up “Jewish family services” in your area. JFS serves anyone in the community, regardless of whether or not they are Jewish. Jewish Family Services helps people even if they are not Jewish. We don’t evangelize.

If a synagogue tells you to contact JFS, it’s not because they are avoiding helping/the responsibility, or because they won’t help. It’s because that local Jewish community already has a dedicated organization specifically focused on helping children and families in need. It’s possible the synagogue may still help directly but we do have organizations dedicated to helping children and families and if there is a JFS nearby, they likely have more and better resources ready. (Also one JFS may be supporting and being supported by several local synagogues at the same time, so the reach is bigger.)

Edit: also any given JFS may offer a WIDE variety of resources. You don’t need to have children. Things like group and individual therapy/counseling (mental health, addiction, etc), obtaining food (generally), obtaining clothing, elder care resources, assistance for refugees, disability assistance, elder care, financial education, adoption support, finding employment assistance, etc etc etc.

BOTULISM INFANT FORMULA RECALL IN 10 STATES

BYHEART BRAND is sold at major retailers. Fortunately it is less than 1% of the formula market.

Spread this on social media, please. Botulism is very very bad.

image

This is known to have affected these lots of ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula:

  • Lot: 206VABP/251261P2 (“Use by 01 Dec 2026”)
  • Lot: 206VABP/251131P2 (“Use by 01 Dec 2026”)

No deaths, investigation ongoing.

If you have a can of the affected lots, photograph the formula packaging, be absolutely sure to record the numbers on the bottom, and if you still have the receipt, I’d personally save that too as evidence of point of sale. They are advising people to throw the formula away.

Please read the article for more information about what to do, symptoms, and more about the investigation.

hey here’s a website for downloading any video or image from any website.

works w/ youtube, soundcloud, twitch, twitter (gifs and videos), tumblr (video and audio), and most other websites you’re probably lookin to download stuff off of.

for anyone wondering about privacy and whatnot, i’m happy to say that the developers are pretty committed to have 0 trackers and 0 data retention. you can read more in their “about” section, but here’s the basic important stuff:

COBALT MENTIONED OUTSIDE OF TWITTER???

^ (one of the lead devs that made cobalt)

thank you for your thingy, it’s real useful 🙏

It won’t do YouTube now, and it won’t do any premium content (think an official account of a larger artist on Soundcloud), but it’s still damn useful, and you should donate to their efforts if you can!

i think a lot of ppl assume food pantries are for if you’re completely destitute and have no food in your house at all.

just so you know if you forego certain foods because you can’t afford them or you can’t “justify” spending the money, you might be able to get that food at a pantry.

i was living in a super wealthy area once where the only grocery store within a 40 minute drive was all fancy upcharged local organic and i literally pretty much stopped eating fresh produce because i couldn’t afford it. i went months without eating a carrot or greens or anything that didn’t come from a can. sometimes i got frozen veggies.

so sure, i was eating. i wasn’t starving. i was getting nutrition. but it was nuts that as an animal on earth where plants grow in abundance, i didn’t get to eat any of them fresh. people deserve fresh produce!

one day i was lamenting it and my friend was like, “oh yeah i get all of my produce every week at the food pantry.”

i was surprised bc she made the same paycheck as me and i wouldn’t have thought of either of us as someone who ‘qualified’ for food assistance. i went to the food pantry and found out because the median income in our town was so high, i did qualify. more than that, they asked for no proof of income, it was more of a 'if you think you need help, we don’t make you prove it,’ situation.

for like 8 months i got all of my produce (and eggs!) there every week. and yes if i had made sacrifices elsewhere in my life i probably could have afforded some produce at the local grocery store. i could have, i don’t know, skipped seeing the one movie i saw at a move theater once every couple of months and spent the $8 on spinach one time instead of the ticket and had spinach once every couple of months.

but the point is the food pantry had more than enough to go around. if i hadn’t taken some of their produce, it would have gone bad. the resource was available to me, and there was no reason for me to crawl on my hands and knees to qualify for it.

resources like food assistance are not available everywhere and they can be very limited and hard to come by. they won’t be given out just for fun to anyone. if you ask for assistance and are offered assistance in reply, you need to believe that the assistance is available for you.

if a food assistance program doesn’t have resources to help you, it’ll say so. there is no harm in asking! you will be told 'yes’ or 'no.’ but you won’t know until you ask.

stop convincing yourself that you don’t deserve assistance, that everyone else needs it more than you, that you’re taking it from someone else, that you should have nothing at all in order to deserve anything.

you deserve to not only eat but to eat well. if there’s assistance for you to access better foods than what you have, understand how fortunate you are, and stop denying yourself that resource!

accessing food assistance at pantries is also a great way to help yr community, because you can spread the word and help normalize receiving food assistance in yr community. you can even become a volunteer and be part of the team providing to you and others (i did that and it rocked)!

my point is, yes, there is always someone who needs something 'more’ than others. i have been completely destitute and it sucks. but when i went to the food pantry never once did i think, 'nobody better be here if they have more than me.’ i was grateful that we all had support.

If you’re thinking about moving on from Spotify, I can’t recommend enough getting into modern MP3 players (more properly called digital audio players, or DAPs, since they play more filetypes than just MP3) and building your own music library.

There’s been a massive amount of innovation in the lower end of DAPs, and you can get a lot for under $100. Here are the main ones I recommend:

  • Snowsky Echo Mini - This is the most affordable one, at only $65 CAD (I think it’s even less in the US) and the one that I ended up buying. Designed to look like a cassette player. The main drawback is that the interface is slightly unintuitive and it doesn’t have a touch screen, but I’ve been delighted with mine.
  • Hiby R1 - This goes for $85 USD, and is the most widely recommended of the bunch for its good UI and wide range of utilities. Has a touchscreen and buttons.
  • Tempotec V1 - Similar to the Hiby R1, although the specific features are slightly different. Also has a touchscreen and buttons.
  • Innioasis R1 (honourable mention) - Designed to look nearly identical to an iPod Classic, including a fully functional clickwheel The sound quality on this is notably worse than the other DAPs I listed above, and the Bluetooth is widely reported to be unreliable, but I have to include it for people who desperately want an iPod again (and don’t want to shell out $300+ for a modernized Classic) and because it has an extremely active modding scene.
Snowsky Echo MiniALT
Hiby R1ALT
Tempotec V1ALT
Innioasis R1ALT

You will need to buy a microSD card to upgrade the storage of most of these, although these days you can get 250GB for under $20.

I can’t speak for the others, but the Hiby also has an aux/headphones jack port.

Tbh, I find its UI rather dodgy, it needs a “back” button instead of just “next” and “pause”, and the volume doesn’t go nearly as loud as it should (even outside of headphones mode), but it’s still a solid unit. Plus, I love being able to use folders, ala my ancient PJB-100.
